Food Cowboy helps food companies access $1 billion in special tax deductions by using mobile technology to route surplus inventory to charities instead of landfills. In so doing, it helps feed 50 million hungry Americans and protect the environment. The USDA has invited Food Cowboy to form a Technology Innovation Council to identify other high-tech solutions. The three major food industry trade associations have all signed on. Food Cowboy charges charities 10 cents per pound for donations. Food Cowboy was founded by two brothers, a trucker and a lawyer/consultant/nonprofit manager, who have been rescuing fresh produce for over 20 years. They were joined in 2013 by an expert in emergency food systems. This is an opportunity to deliver significant economic while helping to solve a human problem of enormous scale using current technology.
