Driving into a headwind kills fuel efficiency (or battery range) on ground vehicles. The Tesla Model S loses ~15% (306 miles down to 261) of highway range if you happen to drive 55 MPH with a 10 MPH headwind. That’s a lot! Neither vehicle manufacturers nor drivers are able to automatically mitigate the headwind fuel economy penalty in real time -- but AeroApp can. The product uses an aircraft style pitot tube to monitor airspeed and mitigate headwind fuel economy penalties. It functions by sensing real time headwind and then commands the cruise control to slow down. When headwind is not detected, original vehicle speed is resumed to the original setpoint. If a strong tailwind is detected, vehicle speed increases to perform a kind of energy harvesting from the favorable wind conditions. For long haul trucks, this product increases fuel economy by 6% and has about a 2 month payback assuming average wind conditions. It also is ideal for increasing range on electric vehicles.
